I have often pondered the issue of human behavior and how power seems to corrupt so many of us. Rather than ponder it alone, I thought it might be interesting to see if we can generate some discussion here.
Here’s the observation and question:
The connection between power and its impetus for human corruption is well established throughout history with countless examples so commonly known as to warrant further elaboration unnecessary. What troubles me about this characteristic beyond the obvious, however, is that I believe I have witnessed this same propensity among people within our community. Not always given to my own observations, I have also heard many complaints and criticisms from some of my most highly respected friends regarding this same phenomenon. Specifically, it seems that the most talented, stylized and spiritually gifted individuals among us often grow smug or condescending as their paths take them to the highest levels of their crafts, gifts or skills. Even those who seem to peek out from behind their shells from time to time seem to lack sincerity or appear motivated by some other factor. Is this not power and corrupted spirits or are there other factors at work? I wonder if Buddha, Lao Tze, Ghandi or other enlightened ones speak directly to this problem? Or did they all have goupies on the side ;)
thanks
David

Re: Power challenges integrity
Wed, February 16, 2005 - 10:43 AMpower does not corrupt , greed corrupts. power challenges integrity.
we are programmed from childhood that 'power corrupts' and it becomes a self fulfilling prophesy.
i have, and have had, varying degrees and types of power at my disposal and have only abused the ones where , in retrospect i felt that the power fed or satisfied a need, fear, insecurity or need to control.
i firmly believe that we are taught to be greedy. we are taught to be needy. we are taught to control and manipulate to our advantage at a cost to others.
i firmly believe that you can unlearn these these teachings and reprogram ourselves to have an ecological existence, a balance where power can be used , not abused.
as for these powerful men. i have no idea whether they where corrupt or not.
either you are corrupt or you are not. if you are corrupt in any area of your life, then you are vulnerable to allow power to enter the area of your corruption and even spread.
it is not possible to really know if any of these men where corrupt or not, only they new.
everything else is opinion and hearsay.
are you(the reader) as an individual corruptible?
i ask myself that question once and a while and the answer is; less and less everyday i walk my path towards integrity, and with each step the mastery of my power grows...

Re: Power and Corruption
Sun, February 20, 2005 - 6:23 PMStarhawk has actually written a lot about this topic in her book Truth or Dare. I've found it's greatly influenced my thoughts about power.
She distinguishes three types of power: "power-over," referring to domination and control; "power-from-within," meaning personal ability and spiritual integrity; and "power-with," pertaining to social power or influence among equals. I have also found her to be someone who walks her talk. Of course it's always a challenge. The hardest thing I've found is to stay in integrity while working with people who are living in the corrupt power over model. I've found myself starting to engage in power battles cause it seemed the only way to influence the situation. I never really found an answer except to remove myself from the situation and try to create a more power with situation elsewhere. Laura -

Re: Power and Corruption
Mon, February 21, 2005 - 7:09 PMMaybe you are expecting too much from mere humans, we all seem to, without knowing it, have a natural tendency to take short cuts to prop ourselves up, to make ourselve feel better, and power over others is a really tempting one. I expect that I will fail unknowingly this test now and then, and I hope that my real friends will point it out to me. Ghandi was human.........
